Dr. James Eberhardt

Dr. James Eberhardt is Chief Scientist for the Office of “FreedomCAR” and Vehicle Technologies” in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, United States Department of Energy.  During his career, spanning 28+ years of federal service, Dr. Eberhardt has provided leadership for three multi-million dollar research and development programs of national significance.  These include his most recent past position as Director, Office of Heavy Vehicle Technologies and his two previous positions as Director, Office of Transportation Materials and Director, Energy Conversion and Utilization Technologies Division.  Since 1997 Dr. Eberhardt perhaps has been best known for his advocacy and research program to develop technologies for “cleaning up the diesel engine”.  Margo Oge, Director of the Office of Mobile Sources for the Environmental Protection Agency has dubbed Dr. Eberhardt, “the father of the light truck clean diesel”.  Dr. Eberhardt earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Seton Hall University and his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Physics from the University of New Hampshire.  He then spent two years at the University of Pisa in Italy as a National Research Council (Italy) Postdoctoral Fellow.
