J. Gary Smyth

Dr. J. Gary Smyth is Engineering Director of Advanced Engineering for General Motors Powertrain. Smyth began his career with GM in 1989 as a senior project engineer with GM Advanced Product Engineering in Warren, Michigan. He has held numerous positions in the Advanced Powertrain organization and was named Engineering Director, Advanced Propulsion System Controls in 1999. Current responsibilities include advanced diesel and advanced emission development.

Smyth attended The Queen’s University of Belfast (QUB) in Northern Ireland. He studied Mechanical Engineering and completed his PhD in 1989. He served, as the GM representative on the management committee of the Low Emission Partnership (LEP), under United States Council on Automotive Research (USCAR), from 1999 to 2003.
